Jacqui Smith

Jacqui Smith

What do you do when you’ve been pushed out of your job for fiddling your expenses? Well you go on and produce a documentary loosely connected with one of the reasons you were forced to leave in the first place.

Amongst the many reasons that Jacqui Smith lost the prestigious job as Home Secretary in the last UK government was a claim for satellite TV. Scandalous yes in that satellite TV is not a necessity, but what really got the UK electorates indignation stoked up was that two of the items on the bill were porn movies which her husband (Richard Timney) watched.

Because of this the BBC now think Ms Smith is fully qualified to make an hour long BBC radio documentary about the porn industry. It’s billed as a personal journey for Jacqui as well as aiming to educate the listeners about the workings of the adult industry.

By including a range of opinion from inside and outside porn the programme will aim to “challenge” people’s views of the adult industry. It will be interesting to see how successful it is.

And the title? “Porn Again” The committee at the BBC who thought that one up must be proud of themselves.

On a related and possibly connected note the previously non-porn-aware Ms Smith has applied for a job at the BBC alongside her current position as advisor to Sarina Russo Job Access. A firm apparently owned by friends of her ex boss Tony Blair. And the job at the BBC? Two and a half days a week for £77K per anum. Nice work if you can get it. Maybe the documentary is an extended interview?

Porn Again air on BBC Five Live from 21:30 to 22:30 GMT  on 3rd March 2011.
