Video Barbie

Mattel the makers of Barbie, the cute doll most girls would like to play with have released an upgraded model. Unlike previous special editions this one has a video camera mounted in her necklace and a screen mounted in its back for playback. Obviously aimed at the mobile phone equipped youngster, at first glance it seems like a logical progression from the passive toys of the past and into this multimedia age.

The video will live stream to your computer or you can record up to 30 minutes of footage before downloading to your PC using the mini USB port she is equipped with. Of course you can do this and more with mobile phones but this is a camera in an object that would look at home in most girl’s bedrooms where it could quietly record without being noticed.

Video Barbie hasn’t been very well received over in the USA where there have been claims that the doll could be misused by child sex offenders.  The Sacramento FBI have taken the whole matter very seriously and issued a warning about the toy.

I noticed the doll is now on sale in the UK and I must say I have deep reservations about it. It was even featured on the BBC’s early evening “The One Show” as a Christmas gift. Of course to most people this is an ingenious new variation on the classic Barbie theme, but in the wrong hands the possibilities do not bear thinking about.
